I always have the best of intentions when it comes to training…to stick with my exercise training program, eat right and get plenty of sleep. Weather has been a factor this week as spring in the Rockies is unpredictable. Spin classes are consistent and great for intervals and hard workouts. I did get in a two-hour outdoor ride yesterday to test my new (borrowed) bike. I come by this beautiful, fast, very cool “ride” only because my friend and training partner will have to miss the Iron Horse race this year. We have ridden the race for the last two years but now she is fighting hard against a rare form of cancer. I pray that she is riding by my side next year! I will push myself to go harder and faster because of my generous, remarkable friend. The food plan (never say diet) is tougher when our family is going so many different directions. Teenagers are so busy with their schedules and it’s hard to sit down together each night. Dinner is usually something healthy and basic like chicken, wild rice and broccoli or asparagus; organic burgers with sweet potato fries and salad or in the winter, a crock pot meal with organic protein and lots of roasted veggies. When the kids are gone, it’s easy to supplement breakfast or lunch with protein shakes. My personal favorite is made with 1 C Silk Coconut Milk (the best), 1/2 banana, 1 T unsweetened cocoa powder and 1 serving of unflavored vanilla protein powder. My husband is now on a green drink kick. This morning we had a tart, refreshing combination of spinach, carrot, apple, unsweetened cranberry juice and lemon but, an hour later, I needed my oatmeal, walnuts, blueberries and flax seed. Sleep is one thing I do not take for granted. Last week, my son had a bad cold and after a few days of homeopathic medicine and herbs, we broke down and gave him over-the-counter meds to sleep. He woke us up twice with horrible nightmares from the “drugs” and was groggy all day long. We will be boosting the whole family’s immune system with elderberry syrup, Vitamin C, D3 and Hi-Health’s Extra Strength Immune Nutrition with Beta Glucan. Do the very best you can, have fun and stay motivated!
