I’ve been Vegan for awhile now and it’s not as easy as it looks. Having a simplified diet can actually get pretty complicated! Start reading labels and you can get lost in a sea of five-syllable ingredients and end up waiving your napkin in defeat.
Not gonna lie, I’ve had a Chris Farley moment or two.
But, I keep trying. And thankfully, there’s an app for that. Yep, you read that right. "Is it Vegan?" is an app I have on my phone that allows me to scan the bar codes of packaged goods and provides me with a quick analysis. It decodes some of those frightening words and tells me why I can or can’t eat them. Pretty sweet.
I’ve also discovered sites like HappyCow.net, that find Vegan-friendly restaurants in my area and grocery stores that carry items with a Vegan label. I’m getting the hang of this. Things were looking up. I felt confident. I felt empowered. My stomach felt full.
Then, things got tricky.
Those everyday items you think are Vegan can throw you a curve ball. I used to order a spiced latte every Saturday morning from a local coffee shop. I swapped the milk for almond milk and thought I was good to go. Nope. I later found out that condensed milk was hiding in those spices. Momentarily, I felt defeated, but then I reminded myself that each meal is a new chance to try again.
That wasn’t my first mistake and I’m guessing it won’t be my last. Many foods pretend to be something they’re not and lately, I’m pretty much convinced we try to stick butter, dairy and eggs in everything we can. I just want to eat in peace, not be dubbed a picky eater.
But, I guess that’s what I am and I’m proud of it. This is still the best decision I've ever made. And there are plenty of other food and drinks out there that are still willing to be supportive. Allow me to introduce them to you, in case you feel the need to Veg(an) out.
Below are some of my favorite Vegan-friendly snacks and essentials that share my love for compassionate cooking and life.
