Keeping the Family Well

Here are a few things that you can do to help keep you and your family well as the seasons change!

I see it every year around this time. People pour through the door saying ‘my throat hurts’, ‘I just don’t feel like myself’, ‘I feel like I have been run over by a truck’.

The first thing I would ask is, ‘Are you getting enough sleep?’ A good night's rest is the best thing for your immune system. During sleep, the body heals the most. Your body releases more human growth hormone (HGH) and helps calm the body down so that your immune system can go to work.

The next thing I would ask is, ‘When was the last time you ate fruits and/or vegetables? What kind of vegetables and were they cooked?’

Vitamin C has been shown to be helpful for keeping any cold and flu at bay. Fruits and vegetables are naturally high in vitamin C. But vitamin C gets destroyed with heat and exposure to oxygen. So if you have a fruit or vegetable that you know is high in Vitamin C and then you cook it, the vitamin C gets destroyed. Vitamin C also goes away if you leave it out in the air for long periods of time too. If you have a carton of orange juice and it sits in your fridge for a week…there might not be any C left in it.

Here’s a little piece of trivia. Did you know that bell peppers have about 3-4 times the amount of Vitamin C than oranges do? One navel orange is pretty good at 82.7 mg of vitamin C but one large Yellow Bell Pepper has a whopping 341.3 mg of C (stats from the USDA)!

Do you think it’s possible to get enough vitamin C though your food right now?

If not, I would suggest using a supplement of 500mg of vitamin C in either chewables or capsules, a couple of times a day. I prefer chewables because they are easy to throw in your pocket and chew throughout the day.

Another good suggestion to keep you feeling well and ruling the world is to practice proper hand washing too. (See previous post about how).
