Cleaning with Essential Oils

Spending the day cleaning the house can be exhausting, especially with those dizzying chemical fumes clouding your mood. The next time you want a clean home without the toxic turmoil, try pure essential oils. Certain essential oils have antimicrobial properties that help ward off germs naturally. A drop or two of Lemon Oil for example, combined with baking soda can free your fridge of smelly leftovers and leave a lemon fresh scent. Try these other essential oil hacks for a clean home and turn spring cleaning into a breath of fresh air.

Squash those sticky counter tops.

1-2 drops of Lemon Oil can help remove clay, crayons or play-doh residue on the walls or tables.

Say goodbye to cigarette smoke.

4 drops of Tea Tree Oil and 4 drops of Eucalyptus Oil combined in a spray bottle with water can help eliminate the smell of cigarette smoke.

Get rid of gunk and greasy pans.

Break up grease in dirty pans by adding a few drops of Lemon Oil to dish water.

Ditch the store-bought dryer sheets.

Create your own dryer sheets by adding 10-15 drops of Lavender Oil or Orange Oil to a terry cloth and tossing it in with clothes or towels.

Scrub away soap scum.

Combine the following oils into a paste: 4 tablespoons of Baking Soda with 4 tablespoons of sea salt, 20-30 drops of Lemon Oil, 6 drops of Peppermint Oil and 6 drops of Tea Tree Oil. Use on tile and grout.

Create a relaxing air freshener.

Create a calming air freshener with 10-20 drops of Lavender Oil combined with 16oz of water in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle prior to refreshing any room.

Crush carpet odors with deodorizer.

5-10 drops of Lemon Oil, Lavender Oil or Peppermint Oil added to a box of baking soda can make a natural carpet deodorizer. Mix well and sprinkle on the carpet. Let it sit for 1 hour and then vacuum.

Keep your fridge free of food odors.

Combine 3 drops of Lemon Oil to 1 cup of baking soda and place it in the fridge to remove stinky smells from leftovers.

Add wow to wooden surfaces.

10 drops of Lemon Oil, 1 cup of water and 1 cup of vinegar when combined in a spray bottle make a great cleaning solution for deodorizing wooden surfaces.

Sanitize your floors with antimicrobial H20.

Eucalyptus Oil, Tea Tree Oil or Clove Oil (around the holidays) added to a bucket of mop water or homemade cleanser can help sanitize spaces because of their antimicrobial properties.

Keep pests away from your pantry.

Peppermint Oil makes a useful insect repellent when applied to a cotton ball. Add a few drops, then place cotton balls around your doors, inside cabinets and near the fridge to keep unwanted pests away.
