The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) was a 10-year major eye nutrition study conducted in the 1990s and sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI), one of the Federal government's National Institutes of Health. The Age-Related Eye Disease Study was designed to:
- Investigate the natural history and risk factors of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.
- Evaluate the effect of high doses of antioxidants and zinc on the progression of AMD and cataracts. Results from the AREDS showed that a combination of high levels of antioxidant vitamins A, C and E (in combination with the mineral zinc) significantly reduces the risk of advanced macular degeneration and its associated vision loss.
